That wonderful time of year is here again. It is time to start decorating for Christmas. This is the time of year when you can turn your home into a showpiece for the comfort and cheer that the Christmas holiday season brings.
Garland is perhaps the most popular and useful Christmas decoration available, and its versatility makes it perfect for virtually any holiday. Here are some creative uses for garland this Christmas season:
Indoor Christmas Garland Ideas
You can wrap garland around the rails of your stairways for a homey touch that flows from one level of your home into another.
Everyday door frames are the perfect opportunity to liven up your home for the holidays. All you have to do is hang garland over your door frames, and your whole home will be festive.
Bookcases are an often underutilized decorative opportunity. Garland can be either draped over the top, trailing down the sides of the bookcase, or small pieces can be artfully placed on each shelf.
When you are getting ready to sit down to a holiday meal with your family, it’s nice to have a festive holiday centerpiece to dress up the table for the special occasion. You can use garland in or around a centerpiece for the perfect touch.
A Christmas tree is not fully decorated until you have added garland. We usually use silver or gold garland with some strands of red or garnet bead garland wrapped around and in the tree.

Christmas Garland Ideas Outside
We always add pre lit battery operated garland over and around our front door. This little chore is much easier since I started using this Adjustable Garland Hanger. I don’t have to drive nails or staples into my door frame just to keep the Christmas garland in place.
We don’t always add garland to our outside windows. Some years for Christmas window decorations we go with just wreaths. However when we do use garland, we use pre lit battery operated garland with timers. And we only put the garland on the window sills, not all around the windows. Much easier and simpler.
If you have light posts or other lights in your yard, you can wrap each base with garland to give it a festive look. I like to use rope lights that I wrap in the garland for this. Most of my rope lights are battery operated and have timers. I still have a few that I have to plug in to an outlet. I will probably replace those with solar rope lights within the next few years.
A little bit of garland can turn a regular mailbox into a beautiful holiday decorative piece. Better yet, get one of those mailbox garland swags that are made just for mailboxes. They really make your mailbox stand out.
We drape garland between our fence posts and tack some bows to the posts. I have never added lights and don’t believe that I ever will. But if I did, I would buy the longest pre lit battery Christmas lights with a timer that I could find. Then intertwine the lights and the garland. Could be a big job depending on how long your fence is.

Christmas Garland Decorations
Garland might seem like the simplest of Christmas decorations, but garland really adds a festive touch to any room, home, or office. Add easy touches such as flowers, pine cones, tinsel, or frost with canned “snow” to give it an extra special look.
Because it is so versatile, garland is the perfect Christmas decoration for just about any area whether indoors or outside. Garland is the quintessential holiday decoration for any home or any space that needs some Christmas cheer.
You can find garland in any craft or home store, or floral boutique. You can use garland made from real plants or choose artificial. The options are truly endless.
